My hair: A nightmare that made me go natural
My last relaxer was in August of 2010. I went natural because I had a girl's worst hair nightmare. I wanted color so bad that I began to use Sun In because I couldn't wait to dye my hair and I didn't want to listen. Every day I would soak my hair with this strong product and sit in the sun the summer of 2010. I know what your thinking, she's really that dumb. At the age of 14, I really didn't know any better when it came to my hair, all I knew was I could not bleach my hair if I have a relaxer. Sun In is basically peroxide which is a strong chemical. The whole summer I continued to do this until school started. For back to school I needed my hair done, so I wanted to relaxer it. And yes, I know this story get even dumber. !
So as I sit with the relaxer in my hair, it began to really burn. It wasn't the normal burn of the relaxer, it was more of a " I just spilled hot water on my head" type of burn. As I rush to the sink to wash my hair out, I slow start to see my hair falling out. At that point everyone in my house begins to worry, it wasn't much anyone could do at that point. All I could do was cry, I couldn't stop crying. My 4 year old cousin rubbed my back and said " Its okay baby , its going to grow back". I'm 14 and she's 4, at this point I really realize what I've just done to my hair.I completely burned my hair, to the point of no return.
My hair was badly damaged, and gone. The only thing I could do to my hair was cut it off. My hair dresser cut my hair into a bob, honestly it really didn't cover much. All my hair burned off in the front which is the most noticeable and important part of my hair. At the point I thought no matter what I did, it wouldn't make it better. After about a month of giving it a rest is when I began to do protective styles. I've never felt like $200 was used to wisely and in an important way. Protective styles and this nightmare happening to my hair made me want to go natural. The ingredients in a relaxer are VERY strong and I never wanted to go through that situation again or anything close to it.
Using protective styles helped my hair to grow, after every 3 months I would cut my relaxer out. As time when on I continued to cut my hair into a bob until I was relaxer free. This has honestly taught me a lot. I should listened to my mother when she said that wasn't a good a idea. She always tells me " You have to learn from your mistakes, and you wouldn't learn until your hair is gone. Lord, my mother was right, i really learned my lesson. Now i do not ever want to relax my hair or think about putting ANY chemicals in my future daughter's hair. I have learned to embrace my natural curls and now I love it.
